Let's Dig In!
With increasing frequency I’ve been starting my mornings off with a smoothie. Part of the reason is it’s quicker than spooning my way through a bowl of Raisin Bran or Cheerios. Plus I find smoothies give me a much needed energy boost without having to rely on a cup of java every morning.
Most mornings I gravitate towards either making a Peaches and Cream Smoothie or a Mango-Pineapple Smoothie. I thought it was about time I got myself out of that rut so I came up with this Apple-Cinnamon Smoothie. For this one you'll have to dig out the unsweetened apple sauce and the honey. Add milk, cinnamon, lemon zest and a ripe banana to thicken things up and you’ll have yourself a very flavorful and nutritious smoothie! It sort of reminds me of apple pie and ice cream in a glass...that's right...a classic dessert in a glass!!! Mmmm...Mmmm! Thankfully in this case you're not stuck holding the extra calories.
At first no song came to mind when I was preparing this in the wee morning hours. Then later in the day I heard the song “Rock with You” by the late Michael Jackson. It had the same vibe as this smoothie. A laid back feeling with just enough "boogie" thrown in to get you going!
Rock With You Apple-Cinnamon Smoothie
A mildly sweet smoothie with apple, cinnamon and a hint of lemon
1 cup milk
½ cup unsweetened apple sauce
1 small banana
1 tbsp honey
½ tsp grated lemon zest
Pinch or two ground cinnamon
In a blender, combine milk, apple sauce, banana, honey, lemon zest and cinnamon. Blend until smooth.
Volume: Makes 1 Smoothie
