Beat the Cooking Blues and You Won’t Get Salted

I admit it. The odd time I make a pre-packaged meal for dinner. It's usually when the fridge is empty and I don’t have time to make a trip to the grocery store. But like most things that offer convenience they are best used in moderation. Besides being costly, the biggest concern I have about ready-made meals is the amount of salt they contain. The salt in these meals can do more harm than just boost your blood pressure. According to Nutrition Action Health letter, researchers recently found that an increased intake of salt can cause stiffness in the artery linings and in the main pumping chamber of the heart. You don't want that.

All the more reason to prepare a healthy homemade meal before you reach for an over salted packaged product.

If you’re having trouble beating the cooking blues may I suggest the invigorating beats of James Brown to get you moving? It may sound old fashioned but I recently rediscovered his greatest hits album and it is pure energy! You can’t help but shake your stuff cooking to the sounds of this musical legend. Try “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” or my favorite...the incredibly funky “Cold Sweat.” Here’s the tune to get you grooving in kitchen and a recipe that comes together in a flash!

What song or musical artist makes you want to move and groove?

In a Flash Burritos

Spread 1 to 2 tbsp of your favorite salsa over a whole wheat flour tortilla, leaving a ½-inch border all around. Top with leftover cooked beef or chicken, red pepper slices, chopped green onions, chopped fresh cilantro, and a sprinkle of your favorite shredded cheese. Roll and pop in the microwave for 30 seconds on high or until cheese is melted. It’s a delicious and nutritious nibble when you’re on the run!
